2014-06-28 INAJune 25th, 2014 marks the Golden Jubilee for SCJ Scholasticate of Indonesian Province. This formation house thankfully celebrates his presence in Yogyakarta - Central Java. The Scholasticate of the Indonesian province ended the celebration of its 50th anniversary with a festive thanksgiving Mass highlighting the theme “On Becoming the Prophets of Love and Servants of Reconcilliation”. Archbishop Aloysius Sudarso SCJ of Palembang was the main celebrant, with Bishop Albertus Henrisoesanto SCJ, emeritus bishop of Tanjungkarang and the other 53 priests – including some representatives from the US and Asian entities – respectively, as concelebrants. 2014-06-28penta INA

The Holy Family Choir comprising 50 singers sang both the Gregorian and traditional liturgical songs accompanied by an ensemble led by Mr. Panon. During the offertory, Mr. Bernardi and Mr. Samudra – both were the eldest alumni of this Scholasticate – brought the altar gifts to the bishop.

According to Bishop Sudarso, the Scholasticate’s 50-year existence is not a mere human accomplishment. He said, "It is the Holy Spirit himself who sustains this formation house through many people, through the formators – especially Fr. Hoovers, Fr. Elling, Fr. Bert van der Heijden, and Fr. Cees van Paassen – and through the benefactors."

2014-06-28ter INABefore lunch, Rome-based assistant general Father Paulus Sugino SCJ, SCJ Indonesia provincial Father Madya Srijanto SCJ and Scholasticate Rector Father FX Tri Priyo Widarto SCJ gave talks. Fr. Sugino emphasized the important role of prayer and community in his talk. Traditional dances by the youths from Sumatera and Java, and a special performance by the disabled-students of the School of Hellen Keller Indonesia, interspersed the addresses.

Fr. Madya said that “the SCJ Scholasticate, erected in 1964, has been giving a lot of contributions for the whole Congregation. Indonesian Province, a rapidly growing reality in our beloved Congregation, is still trying to suffice him in terms of financial resources. Formation, as we always all experience, has a big portion of concerns and costs in our Province. The formation at the Scholasticate aims to teach seminarians about the congregation, its history and charisma, as well as to celebrate and be thankful for everything, while also deepening their knowledge.”

For your information, there are now 36 seminarians who pursuit the undergraduate and master degree in Pontifical Faculty of Theology Wedabhakti Yogyakarta. There will be 7 more newly-professed fraters who will start their philosophy years next semester. 2014-06-28sext INA

“Yes, we can say that we are growing constantly in numbers despite of the trend of declining numbers of vocation in Indonesia generally. Yet, this progress offers us also two main challenges for our Province. Firstly, this reality demands the formators (currently five priest-confreres are serving in the Scholasticate) to help more our young confreres developing their vitality and sensibility to meet the needs of our present world, Church and Congregation. Secondly, we need to find ways to cover up the expenses of this big formation house. We are grateful for big-hearted contributions from many benefactors and other Provinces, like the US, German and Dutch Province,” said Fr. Priyo Widarto SCJ.

Aside from the thanksgiving Mass, the anniversary committee also conducted special tour of Mass for Vocation in several parishes from January to June, Holy Hour for the First Fridays, a vocational gathering for more than 500 catholic pupils around Yogyakarta, a seminar on Religious life on May 29, thanksgiving prayer with the Moslem neighbors, and an alumni homecoming on June 24.
