FIN - A new superior for the Finnish District

On April 13 Fr. Piotr Gebara, SCJ, became the new superior of the Finnish District. In the presence of the provincial superior of the Polish Province, Fr. Artur Sanecki, SCJ, and members of the district, he made his confession of faith during a special Mass at St. Mary’s Church in Helsinki.

Signing at altarIn his homily Fr. Artur thanked the previous administration of the district and, while expressing his wishes to the new superior and his council, he emphasised the value of obedience and the readiness to fulfil the will of God in religious life.

In the afternoon, the bishop of the Diocese of Helsinki, Bishop Teemu Sippo, SCJ, paid a short visit to our community.

The new district superior

Prof of faithFr. Piotr (Peter) Gebara was born on May 10, 1958, in Chorzow, Poland. He made his first vows in 1979 and he continued his formation in the seminary of the Polish Province in Stadniki. He was ordained priest on June 19, 1986. After his ordination he was sent to the parish of Weglowka, in southern Poland. He worked there as an assisting priest until 1989. Then until 1991 he worked in the parish of Chmielow.

In the spring of 1991 Fr. Piotr went to Germany to study the German language and to prepare for his future work in Finland. He arrived to Finland in July, 1991, and began his service there as an assisting priest in Tampere, in southwest Finland. Soon he became the parish priest and served the parish of Tampere until the end of 2002. Since the beginning of 2003 he has been the parish priest of the parish of Turku.
